White curtain gathering tape – 25 mm – four pleats

      Product description

This white gathering tape is 25 mm high and suitable for making curtains with a decorative four-pleat heading. Pulling the drawcords forms the fabric into evenly distributed groups of four pleats. This gives the curtain a fuller and more classic appearance than a simple gathered heading. The tape is easy to work with and is sewn to the reverse of the curtain fabric along the upper edge. After sewing, gently pull the cords until the curtain reaches the required width. Distribute the groups of pleats evenly across the complete width and tie the cords securely. It is best not to cut the cords too short. Roll them up and conceal them behind the curtain instead. This allows you to adjust the width later or release the pleats when the curtain needs cleaning. The gathering tape has an approximate fullness ratio of 1:2.5. For a curtain with a finished width of approximately 1 metre, you will therefore need around 2.5 metres of curtain fabric and 2.5 metres of gathering tape, excluding the required hemming and processing allowance.

      Sewing instructions

First determine the required finished height and width of the curtain. When calculating the fabric quantity, allow for an approximate fullness ratio of 1:2.5. For 1 metre of finished curtain width, you will therefore need approximately 2.5 metres of fabric and 2.5 metres of gathering tape. Add the required fabric for the side and bottom hems and a small processing allowance. Pin or tack the gathering tape horizontally to the reverse of the curtain fabric along the upper edge. Check that the tape is positioned at the same height across the complete width. Make sure the drawcords remain accessible at both ends and do not stitch through them. Sew the tape securely along its upper and lower edges using a thread suitable for the curtain fabric. Tie the drawcords securely at one end and then pull them evenly from the other end. Gently gather the curtain to the required width. Carefully distribute the groups of four pleats across the complete width to create a balanced curtain heading. Tie the cords securely after distributing the pleats. Roll up the remaining ends and conceal them neatly behind the curtain. Only cut the cords if you are certain that the width will not need to be adjusted later. Even then, leave enough cord to secure the knot properly. If in doubt, make a test piece first. This allows you to check whether the needle, thread, stitch length and sewing-machine tension are suitable for the combination of gathering tape and curtain fabric.
