Strong white gathering tape, 25 mm wide, for creating beautifully and evenly gathered curtains yourself. The drawcords make it easy to gather the fabric to the required width. Orderable to the nearest centimetre; the stated price is per metre.
This strong white gathering tape is 25 mm wide, easy to work with and suitable for making curtains with evenly distributed gathers. The tape is sewn to the reverse of the curtain fabric along the upper edge. You then gently pull the cords until the curtain reaches the required width. Distribute the resulting gathers evenly across the complete width and tie the drawcords securely. Do not cut the cords too short. Roll them up and conceal them neatly instead. This allows you to adjust the curtain width later or release the gathers when the curtain needs cleaning. The gathering tape has an approximate fullness ratio of 1:2. For a curtain with a finished width of approximately 1 metre, you will therefore need around 2 metres of curtain fabric and 2 metres of gathering tape, excluding the required hemming and processing allowance.

First determine the required finished height and width of the curtain. When calculating the fabric quantity, allow for an approximate fullness ratio of 1:2 and additional fabric for the side and bottom hems.
Pin or tack the gathering tape horizontally to the reverse of the curtain fabric along the upper edge. Make sure the drawcords remain accessible at both ends and do not stitch through them. Sew the tape securely along its upper and lower edges using a thread suitable for the curtain fabric.
Tie the drawcords securely at one end and then pull them evenly from the other end. Gently gather the curtain to the required width and distribute the gathers evenly. Tie the cords securely, roll up the remaining ends and conceal them neatly behind the curtain.
If in doubt, make a test piece first. This allows you to check whether the needle, thread, stitch length and sewing-machine tension are suitable for the combination of gathering tape and curtain fabric.
