IAN is a Belgian artist who creates monumental textile paintings at the intersection of paint, fabric and line. Drawing on her background in the fashion world, she has developed a distinctive sensitivity to material, pattern and colour. Using natural surfaces such as batiste, cotton gauze and paper, she creates layered works in which soft painted fields, visible stitches and powerful forms come together. Her art is tactile and serene, while maintaining a strong presence within an interior.
IAN creates monumental textile paintings in which paint, fabric and line merge into a refined, tactile image. Her work moves at the intersection of painting and textile art: soft and delicate in material, yet powerful in colour, composition and presence. Her sensitivity to textile and colour originates in the world of fashion. Before focusing on her autonomous artworks, IAN designed patterns and worked with fabrics and colours for fashion designers and brands, including Dries Van Noten and Natalie Vleeschouwer. This background is still tangible in her work: in her attention to material, in the layered quality of the surface and in her instinctive sense of colour combinations. IAN works with natural and refined materials such as batiste, cotton gauze and paper. These delicate surfaces are not neutral canvases, but become part of the artwork itself. The fibres, folds, seams and fine stitches remain visible, giving each piece a human, handcrafted presence. The paint is not merely applied onto the material; it seems to be absorbed by it, to merge with it and to give it colour from within. Her compositions combine distinctive forms with soft fields of colour, each holding the other in balance. Some elements appear almost weightless, as though carried by light or air. Others bring direction and strength to the image. It is precisely this interplay between fragility and power that makes her work so recognisable: refined, spatial and intensely present at the same time. IAN’s textile art invites slow observation. From a distance, the viewer experiences the colour, form and atmosphere of the whole; up close, the material, stitching and subtle transitions reveal themselves. Her works cannot be grasped in a single glance, but unfold layer by layer. Through her strong sense of colour and texture, IAN creates art that does not merely fill a space, but softens and deepens it. A work by IAN brings together tranquillity, movement and tactility: a painterly textile object in which fashion sensibility, craftsmanship and fine art meet.
