Willebrord de Winter
Willebrord de Winter (1941) creates a vivid, imaginative world in which the human figure takes centre stage. In his expressionist paintings, female figures emerge as graceful, powerful and sometimes mysterious presences: like muses, graces or fallen angels within a world shaped by his imagination. The foundation of his work lies in drawing from the live model. From countless sketches, he develops new compositions in which reality is not rendered literally, but transformed into a painterly interplay of movement, colour and emotion. His figures seem to move between recognition and fantasy, between intimacy and theatrical presence. Willebrord studied painting at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and, alongside his artistic practice, developed a career as a teacher and director in visual arts education. His background in drawing and observation can be felt in his free, confident lines and in the way he connects bodies, shapes and space. At the heart of his work lies the tension between contrast and harmony: colour against surface, line against form, figure against setting. As a result, his paintings continue to move, even when the image itself is still. His work feels warm and exuberant, while always leaving room for wonder and personal interpretation.
