About the artist – Martien Klaassen

Martien Klaassen

After his retirement, Martien Klaassen decided to fully dedicate himself to exhibiting his sculptures. Encouraged by his wife, he visited Art Gallery Pot — a step that marked the beginning of his public artistic journey.

Martien works intuitively and with deep respect for the material. He listens to the qualities and characteristics of the natural stone he works with. Whether marble, sandstone or soapstone, the block of stone itself partly determines the final shape.

Using techniques such as filing, grinding, chiselling and polishing, he brings unique forms to life. His work is defined by organic lines and a tangible connection to nature. Nothing is forced; the material leads.

Scenario 1 – On a console against a calm wall
Place the sculpture on a dark pedestal or wooden console against a light wall. This enhances the soft grey-green tones of the soapstone and allows the organic form to stand out.

Scenario 2 – Hotel chic setting
Combine it with warm materials such as brass, marble or velvet. The natural softness of soapstone balances luxurious interiors with shine and rich textures.
