Eye Spy is an original, one-of-a-kind painting by Carol Thomas, measuring 110 × 90 cm. The work has a vertical orientation and depicts a greatly enlarged eye surrounded by partially recognisable facial forms. Because only a fragment is visible, much of the image remains open to personal interpretation. The dark eye forms the visual centre of gravity. Black lashes, lines and flowing shapes give the image strength and guide the viewer’s gaze towards the centre. A dark diagonal line and a deep red area in the upper-left corner add further tension to the composition. These elements are balanced by lighter areas in blue, white, soft green and pink. The colour fields partially merge into one another and do not form a tightly defined portrait. This creates a layered image in which recognition and abstraction coexist. From a distance, the eye, black lines and red area are the most noticeable elements. Up close, the softer colour transitions, small dark accents and irregular edges become more apparent. The direct gaze may create the feeling that the eye is not only being observed but is also looking back. The title Eye Spy reinforces this interaction between observing and being observed. At the same time, the light colour fields soften the intensity of the black. This allows the painting to remain powerful without becoming closed or harsh.

The artist

Carol Thomas works with an expressive sensitivity to form, colour and emotion. In Eye Spy, she demonstrates how one recognisable motif can carry an entire composition. The eye is clearly present, while the surrounding shapes are not completely defined. The contrast between soft colour fields and dark, free-flowing lines gives the work its tension. Not every shape is precisely filled in. Some areas merge into one another, while other accents are applied with strength and clarity. As a result, the painting remains recognisable without becoming a literal or fully defined representation of a face. This approach leaves room for the viewer. The image can feel vulnerable, watchful, concentrated or mysterious. These different interpretations do not arise from a fixed story, but from the close crop, colour contrasts and direct presence of the eye.

A viewing distance of approximately two to three metres allows both the overall composition and the smaller colour transitions to be appreciated. Choose a position with indirect daylight and leave sufficient visual space around the work. Other prominent wall decorations may reduce the impact of the direct gaze.

Scenario 1 – Light and still

Use Old White as a calm base colour and repeat Cyprus White on an adjoining wall, in a niche or on another architectural surface. The light background gives the soft blue, green and pink tones room to breathe, while the black eye and dark red area remain clearly visible. Combine this with light oak, linen and pale natural stone. This choice works well in a living room or spacious hallway where calm and daylight are central. Avoid strongly coloured accessories; the painting already provides enough contrast.

Scenario 2 – Soft and layered

A wall in Shabby Pink picks up the gentle pink tones in the painting. Add Namibian Sand on a second wall, in a niche or on an existing piece of furniture to make the room feel warmer and more grounded. Pale walnut, cream bouclé, washed linen and smoked glass support the layered appearance. This combination works beautifully in a reading corner, bedroom or intimate sitting area. Avoid floral patterns and an abundance of pastel accessories, as these could weaken the tension created by the dark eye.

Scenario 3 – Refined green contrast

A wall in Venetian Green creates a deep background that connects with the soft green tones in the painting. Repeat Cornwall Black in a slender lamp, low cabinet or small interior detail. This links the black lines of the eye with the surrounding room. Dark walnut, pale natural stone and one off-white piece of furniture prevent the interior from feeling too heavy. This direction suits a living room, library corner or space in which art deliberately takes centre stage. Provide enough directional light to keep the lighter colour layers visible.
