Sylvia Radius

Sylvia Radius works figuratively, attentively and with a profound understanding of visual art from different periods and cultures. In her work, people, landscapes and natural forms are reduced to their essence: recognisable and precise, yet always leaving room for stillness, emotion and wonder. Sylvia was born in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and studied Visual Arts Education and Art History in Tilburg. From this broad foundation, she developed an artistic practice in which observing, drawing and painting are closely intertwined. She enjoys working from the live model and directly in the landscape, where a posture, a line or a fleeting moment can be enough to create a meaningful image. During her travels, Sylvia became captivated by traditional Chinese and Japanese painting. The technique of sumi-e, painting with ink, water and a bamboo brush, became an important enrichment of her work. This method requires both control and courage: every brushstroke matters, and it is precisely through leaving things out that space is created for atmosphere and expression. Her work moves between careful observation and free interpretation. A human figure, a magnolia flower, a palm leaf or a landscape is never elaborated excessively, but captured with clarity and sensitivity. This gives her paintings and drawings a quiet strength. They reveal how much emotion can be held in a simple line, a soft colour or an open space. Alongside her own artistic practice, Sylvia shares her knowledge as a teacher of, among other subjects, life drawing and Chinese-Japanese brush painting. This combination of craftsmanship, curiosity and sensitive observation is clearly reflected in her oeuvre: personal, restrained and sometimes unexpectedly moving.
