Johan van Vilsteren offers the viewer an image of something that is resisting form. Ideas derive from a feeling, a moment, a thought triggered by something else seen somewhere else. Eventually all is about seeing; seeing images from the past blurred by the time or images already dreamed as a painting. Images that are clear but intangible, before the painter eyes. What is too literal is disturbing and therefore forgotten while painting. Not omitted but gradually filtered out by touches during the actual painting action. The figurative image is lost in the time spanning the conceptual moment and the moment the brush touches the canvas. Thus the painting becomes an object that depicts and embraces both the originating idea and the process of painting.
