Pauline

Pauline creates quiet textile works in which material, colour and handwork come together to evoke an almost landscape-like experience. On a base of bleached linen, she develops soft, layered compositions that move between recognition and abstraction. What you see is never fixed: a horizon, a cloudy sky, movement within a landscape, or a memory slowly coming into view. Her works begin with the material itself. A layer of fleece is attached to the linen with coarse stitches, forming the tactile foundation of the piece. Over this surface, Pauline allows colours of paint to flow into one another, without sharp contours or defined boundaries. The image remains open and breathing, as though it is still in motion. The embroidered accents bring a special refinement to her work. Thread is not merely decoration, but becomes a drawn line within the textile: sometimes creating rhythm, sometimes interrupting the surface, sometimes forming a small detail that only becomes visible when viewed more closely. It is precisely this combination of soft painted areas and visible stitches that makes her work feel intimate and human. In her textile art, the imagination of the viewer plays an essential role. The forms refer to nature and landscape, yet they do not tell a fixed story. Each work can therefore be experienced differently: as stillness, wind, water, light, or a feeling that is difficult to put into words. The work shown here beautifully illustrates this approach. The warm reddish-pink form appears to detach itself from a misty grey-green environment. Fine embroidered lines introduce direction into the soft colour field, without resolving the mystery of the image. Pauline creates art that does not ask to be understood immediately, but to be observed slowly and felt.
