Eddy Saman: Sculptural Art Rooted in Local Identity

Eddy Saman is a Dutch artist, born in Sint Jansteen and currently residing in Hulst. He is renowned for his impressive sculptures that often incorporate local themes and symbolism. One of his most notable works is the “Steense Rat”—a six-meter-long and 1.6-meter-high steel structure filled with cobblestones. Installed in September 2019, the sculpture graces the entrance of Sint Jansteen. The “Steense Rat” playfully references the nickname of Sint Jansteen’s residents, who proudly call themselves “rats.” Strategically positioned on the noise barrier at the village's entrance, this nearly nine-ton sculpture is a striking landmark. The cobblestones used to fill the rat originate from Hulst, subtly nodding to the nearby Steenpad, a path constructed in 2012. Saman’s work is characterized by a profound connection to local history and community. His pieces are not only visually captivating but also contribute to the cultural identity of the region. The artworks are located at Pot Interieur in Axel and can be viewed there during opening hours and taken home immediately after purchase. Art is not shipped as standard parcel post. Depending on size, material and value, we choose personal delivery or specialized art transport to ensure the artwork arrives in perfect condition. After a reservation or purchase, we always contact you to carefully coordinate transport and handover.
