About the artwork

With a height of 43 cm and a width of 30 cm, KL012 has a solid, almost monumental presence despite its relatively modest size. The outer form is smooth and rounded, while the centre opens into a flowing, asymmetrical space.

The natural stone reveals a richly speckled pattern in shades of grey and black, with subtle tonal variations that add depth to the surface. Through careful polishing, a soft sheen emerges, allowing light to glide over the curves and animate the stone.

The contrast between the massive outer edge and the open interior creates a compelling dialogue between solidity and space. The sculpture feels stable and grounded, yet the central opening introduces lightness and movement.

About the artist – Martien Klaassen

Martien Klaassen

After his retirement, Martien Klaassen decided to actively exhibit his sculptures. Encouraged by his wife, he visited Art Gallery Pot, where his work became part of the gallery collection.

Martien works with deep respect for natural stone. He listens to the material and allows its qualities and characteristics to guide the final form. His sculptures may be crafted in marble, sandstone or soapstone.

Using techniques such as filing, grinding, chiselling and polishing, he searches for natural harmony between mass and movement. His work is organic, pure and faithful to the character of the stone.

Scenario 1 – On a low pedestal in an open space
Placing the sculpture freely, with space around it, allows the inner opening to be visible from multiple angles.

Scenario 2 – In a minimalist interior
Combine with light walls and natural materials such as linen and wood. The speckled stone will receive full visual attention.

Scenario 3 – In a modern interior with contrast
Position the sculpture against a darker background. The lighter nuances in the stone will subtly stand out.

Ideally, place the sculpture at eye level or slightly below. A soft spotlight from above enhances the curves and depth of the inner space.
