Kunstzuil 2 is an original, one-of-a-kind metal artwork by Brian Nochtann. The plinth measures 80 × 35 × 35 cm and consists of metal panels attached to a rusted iron frame with visible rivets. Adjustable feet underneath allow the plinth to be positioned securely and level. The art plinth is intended as an original base for displaying a sculpture or another art object. The clean rectangular form gives the plinth a calm and powerful foundation. The vertical lines of the iron frame emphasise its height, while the square footprint creates visual stability. The warm rust-brown frame provides a clear contrast with the cooler grey and silver tones of the metal panels. The construction is not concealed but deliberately left visible. The rivets, connections and edges make the craftsmanship part of the design. From a distance, the clear geometric shape is most noticeable. Up close, the irregular surface of the metal, the rust texture and the individual fastenings become more apparent. In daylight, the metal panels respond subtly to changing light. Directional artificial light places greater emphasis on the rivets, corners and contrast between the metal and rusted frame. Without a sculpture, the plinth functions as an independent industrial object. When used to display an artwork, it takes on a supporting role without losing its own character.

The artist

Brian Nochtann creates art in which industrial design, functionality and material experience come together. Metal is an important starting point in his work. He uses steel, iron and other durable materials whose strength, texture and natural ageing may remain visible. His visual language is characterised by the interaction between clean lines and weathered surfaces. Smooth and rough sections, solid forms and visible connections create tension without making the construction feel restless. Nochtann does not conceal the making process. Edges, fastenings and transitions between materials remain part of the finished work. This approach is clearly visible in Kunstzuil 2. The simple geometric form creates calm, while the rusted frame, metal panels and rivets give the object a distinctive character. The plinth is functional as a base for an artwork, yet remains recognisable as an expression of metal and craftsmanship even when displayed on its own.

With a height of 80 cm, Kunstzuil 2 raises an art object to a comfortable viewing level. Its 35 × 35 cm footprint makes it suitable for a hallway, living room, workspace or open corner without taking up a large amount of floor space. Leave enough room around the plinth and view it from a distance of approximately 1.5 metres. Raking light along the panels makes the texture, rivets and rust-coloured edges more visible. Always place the plinth on a stable surface and use the adjustable feet to level it carefully.

Scenario 1 – Warm and natural

Combine the plinth with a wall in Old White and use Cyprus White on an adjoining wall, niche or architectural surface. Old White adds gentle warmth, while Cyprus White creates a lighter and fresher transition. This keeps the silver-grey metal clear and connects the rust-brown frame with natural materials such as reclaimed oak, linen and pale natural stone. This combination works beautifully in a calm living room or spacious hallway. Avoid busy patterns and an abundance of small accessories, allowing the materials of the plinth to remain visible.

Scenario 2 – Modern industrial

With Mystery Grey as the background, the metal surface of the plinth gains a subtle and cohesive base. Add Cornwall Black to a second wall, door, cabinet or small piece of furniture to give the construction greater strength. Concrete, black steel and an existing leather chair reinforce the industrial character. In a dark interior, provide directional daylight or an adjustable spotlight; otherwise, the frame and rivets may become less visible. Limit other industrial objects so that the room does not feel hard or overcrowded.

Scenario 3 – Colour and character

A wall in Olive Green gives the plinth a warm and distinctive background. The green creates a natural contrast with the rust-brown frame, while making the grey metal panels appear calmer and more refined. Combine it with dark wood, light bouclé and a floor in natural stone or matt ceramic. This direction suits an eclectic living room, reading corner or space where art forms a deliberate part of the interior. Avoid introducing other strong colours, allowing the green wall, metal plinth and displayed artwork to form one clear composition.
