      The artwork

Steen in rood is an original glass art bowl by Geoffrey Van Hulle, measuring 29.5 × 29.5 cm. Its square form is gently curved: the sides and corners rise upwards, giving the bowl a different outline and light reflection from every viewing angle. Deep red forms the basis of the composition. A black pattern of repeated angular shapes runs along all four edges. This structured interplay of lines follows the contours of the bowl and reinforces its square form. At the centre is a smaller silver-grey area with an irregular, stone-like texture and a dark border. The title Steen in rood becomes particularly apparent in the contrast between the smooth red glass and the rougher-looking central area. The central element appears to rest in the bowl like a stone, while visually remaining part of the glass composition. This creates tension between smoothness and relief, transparency and density, colour and graphic line. Daylight reveals the depth and transparency of the red glass. With directional art lighting, the black border, curved corners and silver-grey texture become more pronounced. The appearance of the bowl therefore changes throughout the day without losing its powerful form.

      The artist

Geoffrey Van Hulle specialises in glass fusing, a technique in which separate pieces of glass are fused together through heat. The glass is heated to a high temperature in a kiln, with temperature, timing and cooling carefully coordinated. In his wider body of work, Van Hulle uses both window glass and glass specifically developed for fusing. He must take the chemical composition and expansion characteristics of the different types of glass into account. A controlled firing schedule prevents thermal stress and ensures that the separate pieces form one stable whole. Technique and design are closely connected in his work. Colours, patterns and glass structures are carefully arranged before the artwork enters the kiln. During the fusing process, the separate elements are brought together while differences in colour, gloss and texture remain visible. This results in unique glass objects in which technical craftsmanship and artistic freedom come together.

      Interior advice by Decoration

With its dimensions of 29.5 × 29.5 cm, Steen in rood can be displayed on a coffee table, dining table or console table. Choose a stable, visually calm surface and leave at least twenty to thirty centimetres of free space around it. Do not fill the bowl with accessories: the red glass, black geometric border and silver-grey centre together form the artwork.

Scenario 1 – Light and graphic

Use Snow White as a bright base for the living room and repeat Cornwall Black on a large architectural feature, such as a fireplace surround, wall niche or low fitted cabinet. Place the bowl centrally on a coffee table in warm walnut. The black border connects with the dark interior elements, while the red glass becomes the room’s only powerful accent colour. Light fabrics, natural wood and a calm rug keep the space soft and inviting.

Scenario 2 – Classic and refined

In a classic dining room, walls in Carmine Red create warmth and depth. Repeat Silver on the wainscoting, doors, wall mouldings, mirror or lighting. Place the bowl as an independent art object in the centre of a dark wooden dining table. The dark tabletop separates the red glass from the red walls, while the silver-grey centre connects with the Silver details. Avoid flowers, candles and an elaborate table setting so that the bowl remains the focal point.

Scenario 3 – Warm and hotel chic

An entrance hall with wall panelling in Umber Brown gives the bowl a warm and layered background. Use Gold with restraint in narrow wall mouldings, lighting and a mirror frame. Place the artwork centrally on a slim console in dark wood. The brown surroundings give the red greater depth, while the golden accents add light and refinement. Keep the rest of the console calm so that the bowl immediately attracts attention upon entering. Steen in rood is offered as an art object. No information is provided about food safety or dishwasher suitability. We therefore recommend using the bowl decoratively and treating it as glass art.
