Metamorphose - Roeland van der Kley
Roeland van der Kley was much more than an artist to Art Gallery. He was also a friend of the gallery—someone with a distinct way of seeing the world and an impressive drive to create, explore, and imagine. His passing on Monday, March 6, 2023, in his home in Hoek came unexpectedly and left a great sense of loss.
Looking at Roeland’s life and work, you see a creator in the fullest sense of the word. He was a designer, painter, writer, draughtsman, illustrator, printer, and filmmaker. It is precisely this versatility that made him unique. Roeland did not work from a single discipline, but from a constant need to give shape to ideas. In everything he created, the same curiosity, intensity, and imagination can be felt.
With this video, we take a moment to reflect on his life, his work, and the person he was. Not only as an artist, but also as a human being and a lasting presence within Art Gallery. The footage offers a glimpse into his world, his way of working, and the richness of a practice that cannot be defined by a single label.
A special element in this film is the archival footage of Roeland himself, which we were able to include thanks to his brother, Michiel van der Kley. It adds a deeply personal layer, revealing not only the work, but also the person behind it. This makes the video a meaningful document, where memory, art, and life come together naturally.
Roeland was an artist of rare breadth and independent strength. For Art Gallery, he remains connected not only through the works he left behind, but also through the spirit of making, thinking, and seeing that continues to resonate in everything he created.
