From the azure-blue sea with your feet on tropical sand

      The Artwork

This original artwork by Nigel Bakker measures 184 cm high x 64 cm wide. Its long vertical format enhances the transition from sand to sea and gives the work an almost landscape-like depth. The composition appears to draw the viewer slowly from the beach into the water.
The artist describes the work with the words:
“From the azure-blue sea with your feet on tropical sand.”
In the upper part of the work, soft sandy tones and fine horizontal structures create a sense of calm. Below, an intense turquoise water surface opens up, with organic lines and relief forms that evoke currents, pebbles, coral or movement beneath the water.
The transition between sand and sea is clearly visible, yet feels natural. This creates an artwork in which two worlds meet: the warmth and stability of the land opposite the movement and freedom of the water.
The relief, patina and natural colour variations cause the surface to change under the influence of daylight and artificial light. Up close, the carved lines, oxidation patterns and subtle colour nuances become visible. From a distance, the work forms a powerful and calming whole.

      The Artist

Nigel Bakker is the Dutch artist behind NB 3D Art. In his work, he combines technology, craftsmanship, material research and aesthetics. His artworks are made by hand and are distinguished by their tactile depth, layering and natural discolouration.
Bakker uses material not merely as a base, but as an active part of the creative process. By working and patinating wood, copper and iron, he creates surfaces that cannot be fully predicted or reproduced exactly. The material responds, changes and therefore contributes to the final image.
His work invites you not only to look, but also to pay attention to texture, light and viewing distance. Up close, you experience the handcrafted construction and relief. From further away, an abstract landscape emerges in which every viewer can discover their own associations.
Sustainability plays an important role within NB 3D Art. Wherever possible, Bakker gives materials a new purpose and explores how existing resources can be transformed into lasting and meaningful art objects.

      The Technique

The technique used is a form of copper and iron patination. The texture was carved by hand into a wooden base. This creates the flowing lines, organic forms and fine structures that give the surface its spatial effect.
After the texture was applied, a mixture of copper and iron was added to the base. These metals were then patinated. During this process, the copper develops turquoise, azure-blue and sometimes greenish tones. The warmer brown and rust-coloured nuances develop from the iron.
The frame is part of the overall design. No copper was used in the frame. As a result, it acquires only the rust-brown colour of the iron. The robust frame creates a powerful contrast with the vivid turquoise water and soft sandy tones of the artwork.
Because of the natural oxidation process, every surface is unique. The precise distribution of colour, texture and discolouration can never be reproduced exactly.

      Interior Advice by Decoration

With its dimensions of 184 x 64 cm, Fiji is particularly suitable for a high, relatively narrow wall. Consider a spacious entrance hall, staircase wall, high-ceilinged living room, mezzanine, reception area or a wall beside a low cabinet.
The work needs sufficient space around it so that its vertical line and relief can be fully appreciated. Keep the immediate surroundings calm and limit the number of accessories. This allows the artwork to remain the natural focal point.

Scenario 1 – Light and Tropical

Combine the artwork with a wall in Old White or Cyprus White. The light background allows the turquoise water to stand out clearly and enhances the warm sandy tones.
Use light wood structures, linen curtains, rattan and a few understated ceramic objects. This creates a fresh and relaxed atmosphere without making the interior feel literally tropical.

Scenario 2 – Natural and Serene

A wall in Namibian Sand or Peyote Green connects the sand, blue-green patina and natural materials in the work. This creates a calm and layered colour palette.
Combine with wood, natural stone, wool, linen and a few organic shapes. Keep furniture and accessories understated so that the transition from sand to sea remains fully visible.

Scenario 3 – Strong and Architectural

For a more pronounced presentation, Mystery Grey or Cornwall Black creates a powerful background. The turquoise colours gain extra intensity, while the rust-brown frame becomes more prominent.
This combination works well in a modern, industrial or architectural interior with steel, concrete, dark wood and understated furniture.
