Fraich is a powerful abstract painting in which vertical lines, layered textures and a deep rust-red core come together in a striking composition. A work that balances calm and intensity, instantly adding character to any interior.

    About the artwork

This square canvas (100 x 100 cm) is built up with layered paint structures in neutral tones such as white, sand, grey and muted taupe. The vertical composition creates rhythm and a sense of height, while the central rust-red stripe deliberately draws the eye inward.

What makes this work distinctive is its texture. Paint has been layered, scraped, applied and partially removed, resulting in an almost weathered, architectural appearance — reminiscent of a wall with history. The contrast between the restrained base and the strong rust accent gives the piece a quiet intensity.

Fraich is abstract, yet never distant. It feels grounded and tactile. The vertical lines bring structure; the imperfections bring humanity.

About the artist – Maryse Quisquater

    Maryse Quisquater

Maryse Quisquater began her career as a high-end window dresser for renowned boutiques in Belgium. She designed and created background walls that shaped atmosphere and brand identity.

Encouraged by one of her clients, she translated this technique onto canvas. What started as an experiment evolved into a series of powerful abstract works. Over time, she developed her signature style: strong vertical compositions, carefully balanced colour palettes, and the use of different high-quality paints to achieve unique textures and depth.

Her background in visual merchandising is visible in her sense of balance, rhythm and impact. Each artwork is designed not only to be beautiful, but to function within a space.

    Interior advice – by Brenda

This is not a piece you simply “hang”. It is an anchor.

Thanks to its square format, Fraich requires breathing space. It works beautifully above a low sideboard, a clean-lined sofa or as a statement piece in an entrance hall. The vertical lines visually elongate a wall — particularly effective in rooms with lower ceilings.

Scenario 1 – Calm, natural interior
Combine it with a matte wall in a soft sand or greige tone. Add linen curtains, wooden flooring and a restrained sofa. The rust-red centre becomes the warm heart of the room.

Scenario 2 – Architectural and bold
Place it against a light grey or off-white wall with concrete or steel accents. The texture of the painting will enter into dialogue with raw materials.

Scenario 3 – Warm colour accent
If you wish to reinforce the rust tone, subtly repeat it in accessories: terracotta ceramics, cognac leather, aged wood. Avoid excess — one or two echoes are enough to create cohesion.

Lighting is essential. This artwork thrives on shadow and relief. Directional spotlights or a subtle wall washer will enhance the texture. Without proper lighting, part of its strength is lost.
