KL011 is an expressive sculpture in brown alabaster where transparency and movement converge. An upward gesture in stone that captures light and combines softness with strength.
KL011 – Martien Klaassen
Material: Brown Alabaster
Size: H 50 x W 25 cm
With a height of 50 cm and a width of 25 cm, KL011 has an elegant vertical presence. The form opens like a fan or a hand in motion — organic, fluid and dynamic.
The brown alabaster reveals warm honey and caramel tones with subtle veins running through the material. A defining characteristic of alabaster is its translucency: when illuminated, the sculpture emits a soft glow from within. The surface is carefully polished, giving it a silky appearance and allowing light to glide along the curves.
What makes this work exceptional is the combination of strength and fragility. The sculpture is firmly rooted in its base, yet the upward lines seem to detach from the mass. The interplay between transparency and volume creates an almost spiritual lightness.
KL011 feels like a gesture of openness — a movement stilled in stone.
Martien Klaassen
After his retirement, Martien Klaassen chose to actively exhibit his sculptures. Encouraged by his wife, he visited Art Gallery Pot, where his work became part of the gallery collection.
Martien works with deep respect for natural stone and allows the material to guide the final form. In marble, sandstone, soapstone or alabaster, he searches for the shape that already resides within the stone.
Through techniques such as filing, grinding, chiselling and polishing, he brings organic lines to life. His sculptures reveal a natural balance between mass and movement — always faithful to the character of the stone.
Alabaster requires light. This sculpture lives through illumination.
Scenario 1 – With directional spotlighting
Place KL011 under a warm spotlight. The translucency of alabaster creates a soft internal glow, allowing the sculpture to radiate from within.
Scenario 2 – In a warm, natural interior
Combine with wood, linen and soft earthy tones. The honey colour of the alabaster enhances a serene and intimate atmosphere.
Scenario 3 – In a modern interior with contrast
Position the sculpture against a darker background. The lighter areas of the stone will subtly illuminate and gain depth.
Ideally, place the sculpture at eye level or slightly below to fully experience the layered translucency of the material.
KL011 is not a solid block of stone.
It is light captured in form.
