About the artwork

With a height of 26 cm and a width of 23 cm, KL002 has a relatively small format yet a strong presence. Two volumes appear to interlock: a tilted, almost cubic form resting on a rounded, open base. The sculpture plays with gravity and balance.

The soapstone reveals cool grey-green tones with natural veins and subtle variations. Through careful grinding and polishing, a soft sheen emerges, highlighting both the sharp planes and the rounded edges. The contrast between the angular upper volume and the circular lower form creates tension.

What makes this work remarkable is its dynamism within a compact scale. The opening in the lower ring introduces air and depth, while the tilted upper form adds energy. The volumes seem to be in motion, yet remain perfectly balanced.

About the artist – Martien Klaassen

Martien Klaassen

After his retirement, Martien Klaassen chose to actively exhibit his sculptures. Encouraged by his wife, he found his way to Art Gallery Pot, where his works have since become part of the collection.

Martien works with deep respect for natural stone and allows the material’s character to guide him. Whether soapstone, marble or sandstone, each stone demands its own approach.

Through techniques such as filing, grinding, chiselling and polishing, he searches for harmony between form and mass. His work combines organic movement with strong spatial logic.
