A serene upward form in which strength and softness merge. This soapstone sculpture by Martien Klaassen reveals the harmony between natural material and human craftsmanship.
The sculpture is defined by elegant verticality and a subtle torsion in its body. The narrowing center creates tension, while the broader top provides stability and presence. The eye naturally follows the upward movement of the stone.
Soapstone allows refinement and precision. Through filing, grinding, carving and polishing, Martien enhances the stone’s natural qualities without forcing its character. The visible veins and tonal variations add depth and authenticity. The dark base strengthens its sculptural presence and gives it a gallery-like appeal.
After his retirement, Martien Klaassen chose to actively exhibit his sculptures. Encouraged by his wife, he presented his work at Art Gallery Pot, where it was immediately appreciated for its craftsmanship and respect for natural materials.
He works with marble, sandstone and soapstone. His approach combines intuition with technical expertise, always searching for balance between strength and refinement.
When styling this piece, I first consider space and calmness. This sculpture deserves breathing room.
Scenario 1 – Strong contrast
Place it against a Cornwall Black wall. The deep matte tone enhances the green nuances of the soapstone and creates a dramatic effect.
Scenario 2 – Natural harmony
Combine with Old White or a soft greyed green tone. Together with wood and linen, this creates warmth and serenity.
Scenario 3 – Light sophistication
Use Snow White as a base and add subtle brass or gold accents. The contrast between the dark base and light surroundings elevates the sculpture.
Placement defines experience: in a hallway it creates a calm welcome; in a living room it becomes a focal point.
