This rubber wood grainer is a practical tool for creating realistic wood grain effects in decorative painting techniques. Thanks to its double function — wood lines and wood flames — you can easily create a natural wood look on walls, panels or furniture. Washable, reusable and available in two sizes.
With a wood grainer you can create realistic wood structures in a wet paint layer. By pulling the rubber tool through the paint you form wood lines and wood flames that resemble natural wood. Ideal for decorative paint techniques on walls, panels or furniture.
A wood grainer is a decorative painting tool used to imitate wood grain patterns in paint. When the tool is pulled through a wet paint layer, characteristic patterns appear that resemble real wood grain.
The tool is made from flexible rubber. This makes it comfortable to handle, easy to clean and suitable for repeated use in decorative painting techniques.
A wood grainer usually has two working sides, allowing you to create different wood patterns.
Wide ribbed side – wood flames
The curved ribbed side creates the typical flame-like wood pattern found in natural wood.
Narrow lined side – wood lines
The straight side with fine lines is ideal for creating subtle wood grain stripes.
By alternating between both sides you create a natural and lively wood pattern.
With Decoration Paint you can easily create a wood effect on walls or panels.
Step 1 – Apply the base coat
Apply a smooth base coat, for example Decoration Paint Olive. Allow it to dry completely.
Step 2 – Prepare a glaze layer
Mix Mystery Grey with Decoration Varnish to create a transparent glaze.
Step 3 – Apply the top layer
Apply this mixture with a flat brush in vertical strokes.
Step 4 – Create wood lines
Pull the lined side of the wood grainer through the wet paint layer to create wood stripes.
Step 5 – Create wood flames
Use the curved side to form soft wood flames and make the pattern more natural.
Once dry, the surface will have a realistic wood texture.
Tip: By using different colours from the Decoration 27-colour palette you can imitate different types of wood, from light oak to dark walnut.
The wood grainer is suitable for decorative paint techniques on:
walls
panels
furniture
decorative wall finishes
The tool works best with wall paint or glaze layers. It is not recommended for lacquer paints because these tend to level out too much and reduce the wood grain effect.
The wood grainer is available in two widths:
10 cm – ideal for smaller surfaces and furniture
15 cm – perfect for larger panels or wall surfaces
The width influences the scale of the wood grain pattern.
After use simply clean the wood grainer with water.
Thanks to the flexible rubber material, the tool remains durable and can be reused many times.
1. How do you use a wood grainer for a wood effect?
Apply a base coat first and allow it to dry. Then apply a glaze layer and pull the wood grainer through the wet paint to create wood grain patterns.
2. On which surfaces can you use a wood grainer?
It works well on walls, panels, furniture and decorative wall finishes where paint techniques are applied.
3. Which paint works best with a wood grainer?
Wall paint or glaze layers work best. Lacquer paints are less suitable because they flow too much and reduce the grain pattern.

A 10 cm wood grainer is suitable for furniture or small surfaces. A 15 cm version works better for larger walls or panels.
5. How do you clean a wood grainer?
